Meaning of Eid al-Adha in Islam

“Eid al-Adha” is an Arabic phrase that translates to “Festival of Sacrifice.” It is one of the two major Islamic holidays observed by Muslims worldwide the other being Eid al-Fitr. Known by several names including Eid ul-Adha, Bakra Eid, Bakrid, and the Greater Eid, this sacred occasion falls on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

At its heart, Eid al-Adha is a celebration of obedience, faith, and surrender to Allah (SWT). It commemorates the extraordinary trial of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who demonstrated complete submission to Allah’s command. The festival is spiritually inseparable from the annual Hajj pilgrimage he fifth pillar of Islam and is observed by over 1.8 billion Muslims across the globe, making it one of the largest religious celebrations in the world.

The practice of Qurbani (animal sacrifice) is central to this Eid. Muslims who are financially able sacrifice a halal animal typically a goat, sheep, cow, or camel and divide the meat into three equal parts: one for the family, one for relatives and friends, and one for those in need. This act teaches the values of charity, sharing, and gratitude in the most tangible way possible.

Why People Share Eid Mubarak Wishes

Sharing Eid greetings is rooted in Sunnah the traditions and practices of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The Companions of the Prophet (SAW) would greet one another on Eid with the phrase “Taqabbalallahu minna wa minkum” (May Allah accept from us and from you), a tradition that continues to this day.

Beyond its religious significance, sharing Eid Mubarak wishes serves a deeply human purpose:

  • They strengthen family bonds and reconnect loved ones near and far.
  • They spread positivity and joy during a time of spiritual reflection.
  • They show respect and inclusion to Muslim friends, neighbors, and colleagues.
  • In the digital age, a heartfelt message on WhatsApp, Instagram, or Facebook turns a personal gesture into a global expression of goodwill.

A single, sincere wish can mean the world to someone spending Eid away from home. That is the power of these words.

Eid al-Adha 2026 is expected to begin on 27 May 2026. As the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar calendar, the celebration lasts for 3 days beginning at sunset on 27 May 2026 and ending on 30 May 2026.

The Story of Eid al-Adha

Every year, Muslims across the world celebrate Eid al-Adha in honor of one of the most profound stories in all of religious history the story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his son Prophet Ismail (AS).

The story of Qurbani states that Ibrahim (AS) experienced a dream in which Allah (SWT) told him to sacrifice Ismail (AS), his beloved son. Ibrahim (AS) was a man of extraordinary faith — a Prophet who had spent his entire life searching for the truth and surrendering himself completely to Allah. To be commanded to sacrifice the person he loved most was the ultimate test.

The festival commemorates the test given to Prophet Ibrahim. After years of prayer for a son, he was finally granted Ismail, and once the boy had grown enough to walk with him, Ibrahim saw a recurring dream in which he was commanded to sacrifice him.

Rather than hiding this from Ismail, Ibrahim (AS) told his son about the dream. In a moment that continues to inspire Muslims to this day, Ismail (AS) responded with complete acceptance and trust in Allah. The Quran records his words:

“You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast.” (Quran 37:102)

So when they had both submitted and Ibrahim put his son down upon his forehead, Allah called to him: “O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the vision. Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good. Indeed, this was the clear trial. And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice.” (Qur’an 37:102–107) The test was the willingness, not the act. At the moment of submission, Allah sent a ram to be sacrificed in Ismail’s place.

Later in life, Allah honored Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his son Ismail (AS) with the task of rebuilding the Kaaba in Makkah, making it a center of worship for generations. They made a powerful supplication: “Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing.” (Quran 2:127)

This story is not merely histor it is a living lesson in trust, obedience, patience, and divine mercy. Every act performed during Eid al-Adha and Hajj is a conscious re-enactment of Ibrahim’s journey.

The Hajj and Ka’bah

Eid al-Adha and the Hajj pilgrimage are two halves of the same spiritual whole. Starting from the 8th of Dhul Hijjah, Muslims from around the world come together to travel to the Ka’aba in Makkah, where they perform the sacred rituals of Hajj.

The Ka’bah — the cube-shaped structure at the center of Masjid al-Haram in Mecca is the holiest site in Islam. One of the most beautiful parts of Prophet Ibrahim’s story is when he built the Kaaba with his son, Prophet Ismail (AS). Together, father and son began the task, using stones and simple tools to build what would become the holiest place in Islam.

Today, millions of Muslims visit the Kaaba for Hajj, continuing the legacy of Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) devotion.

The Day of Arafah the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, which falls one day before Eid al-Adha is considered the pinnacle of Hajj and one of the most sacred days in the Islamic year. On this day, pilgrims gather on the plains of Arafah in equal simplicity rich and poor, black and white, all dressed in white and stand before Allah in prayer and supplication.

How Is Eid al-Adha Different from Eid al-Fitr?
How Is Eid al-Adha Different from Eid al-Fitr?

Many people outside the Muslim community and even some newer Muslims sometimes confuse the two Eids. Here is a clear comparison:

How to Write a Personalized Eid al-Adha Wish

A personalized Eid wish will always mean more than a copied-and-pasted message. Here is a simple, effective framework to write one from the heart in just a few minutes:

Step 1 Choose Your Tone

RelationshipRecommended Tone
Parents / EldersRespectful, grateful, heartfelt
SpouseRomantic, warm, intimate
Siblings / Best FriendsCasual, funny, affectionate
Colleagues / ClientsProfessional, warm, inclusive
AcquaintancesSimple, sincere, brief

Step 2 Start With a Greeting

Begin with Eid Mubarak or Taqabbalallahu minna wa minkum to root your message in Islamic tradition.

Step 3 Add Something Personal

Reference something specific a shared memory, a quality you admire, a prayer that feels tailored to their situation. This is what separates a copied wish from a genuine one.

Example: “I know this year has been hard for you, and I want you to know that I have been making dua for you especially this Eid.”

Step 4 Include a Dua

A sincere dua elevates any message. Common duas to include:

  • May Allah accept your Qurbani and prayers.
  • May Allah grant you health, happiness, and ease.
  • May Allah bring you closer to everything you have been praying for.

Step 5 Close Warmly

End with love, warmth, and your name. A personal sign-off “With all my love,” “Your brother in Islam,” “Your forever friend” makes the message memorable.
